Hoe sluit ik een LED-inbouwspot aan?

Installing LED recessed spotlights

Are you renovating or remodeling your home? Are you in the process of installing recessed spotlights? For many, this seems like a difficult job, but if you follow these simple steps, you'll have it done in no time!

1. Turn off the power

2. Determine the placement of the recessed spotlights

3. Size of the holes

4. Connect the power cable to the central junction box

5. Connect the recessed spotlights

6. Place the recessed spotlight

7. Insert the bulbs

Step 1: Turn off the power

Before you start, it is very important to first turn off the power. You can check this with a voltage tester. This way, you can be sure that the power is off and you can work safely.

Step 2: Determine the placement of the recessed spotlights

When installing halogen bulbs, you must take into account that these bulbs become very hot. Unlike halogen recessed spotlights, LED recessed spotlights become much less hot. However, they also emit heat that you need to consider, as the heat must be able to dissipate.

Our advice is therefore to maintain a minimum distance of 3 centimeters between the LED recessed spotlights and the (suspended) ceiling. However, most LED recessed spotlights have a greater installation depth; this is specified for each product.

Step 3: Determine the size of the holes

Once you have determined the placement of the recessed spotlights, it is important that you have the correct size holes. LedLoket has recessed spotlights with various diameters. The following dimensions are provided for all LED recessed spotlights:

  • The outer diameter: this is the dimension of the bottom of the recessed spotlight, which is the part of the LED recessed spotlight that you see from below.
  • The cutout size: this is the diameter of the hole you need to cut for the recessed spotlight. For example, if the cutout size is ø75mm, you need to drill a hole with this diameter.
  • The installation depth: this is the height of the recessed spotlight. You need this depth in your ceiling to dissipate the heat from the LED recessed spotlight

and to install the spotlight. Do you have a low ceiling with limited space? Then you will need shallow LED recessed spotlights.

Step 4: Connect the power cable to the central junction box in the ceiling

Using terminal blocks, you can connect the power cable to the central junction box in the ceiling. This power cable will supply power to the LED recessed spotlights. You can perform the following steps:

  • Using a wire stripper, remove 2 centimeters of the white/black protective rubber from the power cable. You will now see 2 wires, a blue wire (the neutral wire) and a brown wire (the phase wire).
  • Remove about 3 millimeters of the blue and brown rubber. You will now see the copper inside the wires. By removing the blue and brown rubber, the copper is exposed.
  • Using one terminal block, connect the brown wire of the power cable to the brown power wire from the central junction box.
  • Using the other terminal block, connect the blue wire of the power cable to the blue power wire from the central junction box.

Step 5: Connect the recessed spotlights

Before connecting the LED recessed spotlights, it is important to ensure there is a power supply at each hole. You can connect the LED recessed spotlight to the mains power using a GU10 fitting. For this, you will also need connection terminals/terminal blocks. You can then connect the neutral and phase wires to the connection terminals.

Step 6: Install the recessed spotlights

Once you have connected all the wires, you can place the recessed spotlights into the hole. Recessed spotlights are equipped with clamping springs. Push these clamping springs inwards and place the recessed spotlight into the hole. The clamping system keeps the recessed spot in place.

Step 7: Insert the bulbs

The final step is to place the bulbs into the spots. You can insert these into the bottom of the spot. After this, you can turn the power back on.
