FAQ about Track Lighting: Good to Know!
Track lighting is stylish, flexible, and ideal for modern interiors. However, many questions remain unanswered. That's why we provide clear explanations, practical examples, and smart tipsbelow..
🛠️ How do I expand my track system with extra spots or pendant lights?
📌 Step-by-step expansion:
- Check the track type (1-phase or 3-phase).
Choose spots/pendant lights that are compatible .
- You can mount a pendant light of your choice onto a power track using a pendant adapter (1-phase or 3-phase). Only with track spots will you need to check if they are compatible with the power tracks. In principle, any pendant light will fit on a track in combination with a separate 1- or 3-phase pendant adapter.
- Turn off the power before connecting anything.
- Click or slide the new track spot or pendant light into the track.
- Check the maximum load of your track (see below!).
⚙️ Tip: Use a connector (straight, corner, or T-connector) to connect additional tracks.
⚙️How many spotlights or pendant lights can I place on one track?
⚠️ This depends on:
- The power (Wattage) of your lights
- The maximum load of your circuit group; for a home, this is usually 3680W at 16A.
- The
specifications of the track and adapter
- A 1-phase track system can handle less wattage than a 3-phase track system. This is because a 3-phase track system has thicker copper wires, which can handle more current/wattage.
📌 Example: Are you using 10 LED spots of 10W? Then you are only at a total of 100W. That is perfectly fine.
🛠️ Calculation example: How many track spots can you connect to one track?
When planning your track lighting, it is important to know how many spots you can safely connect to a single track. This depends on the type of track system (1-phase or 3-phase), the wattage of your spots, and the so-called power factor (PF) of the lamps.
⚙️ 1-phase track lighting
A standard 1-phase track has a maximum load of:
10 amps × 230 volts = 2300 watts
👉In theory, you can connect up to 230 spots of 10 watts .
But please note: In practice, such a high load is rarely reached. For safety, you should account for a small margin due to power loss and the power factor of LED spots (often> 0.90).
📌Safe calculation (incl.10% margin):
2300W − 10% = 2070W → a maximum of 207 spots of 10 watts
⚙️ 3-phase track lighting
A 3-phase system has a higher maximum load:
16 amps × 230 volts = 3680 watts per phase
👉In theory, you can therefore connect 122 spots of 30 watts .
📌Safe calculation (incl. 10% margin):
3680W − 10% = 3312W → a maximum of 110 spots of 30 watts
ℹ️ Power Factor (PF): what is it?
The power factor indicates how efficiently a device uses power. LED spots often have a PF of> 0.90. The lower the PF, the less efficient, and the higher the actual load on the circuit. That is why it is best to maintain a 10% margin in your calculation.
🛠️ What types of connectors/couplers are there and what are they used for?
🔌Types of connectors:
- 🔌End feed : Starts the power supply at the beginning of the track.
- 🔌Centre feed : Allows you to start the power supply in the middle of the track.
- 🔌Straight connector
: extends the track in a straight line
- 🔌Corner connector (L) : for an inner or outer corner
- 🔌T-connector : to add a third track
- 🔌X-connector : for a cross-shaped installation
- 🔌Flexible connector : for custom angles
📌 Use per situation: An L-connector is ideal above a kitchen island or work area.A T-connector is useful in an L-shaped space.
PLEASE NOTE: 1-phase track lighting only has one type of coupler for a power connector, L or T-shaped connector. But with 3-phase, you must consider the polarity of the connectors. The red line in the image must align.
Therefore, a 1-phase connector does not fit on a 3-phase connector, or vice versa.

💡 Can I use track lighting in combination with a smart home system?
✅ Yes, you can! But please note the following:
🧠Smart integration options:
- Smart module or
smart dimmer for the track.
- Zigbee dimmable smart module (Works with Philips HUEi.c.m . a bridge)
- Zigbee smart dimmer (Works with Philips HUEi.c.m . a bridge)
- Tuya/WiFi dimmable smart module (Works on WiFi, without a bridge, directly on your router.)
- Tuya/WiFi smart dimmer (Works on WiFi, directly on the router without a bridge)
PLEASE NOTE the maximum wattage a module can handle. (Often max. 200 Watt) This is not suitable for business applications at higher wattages.
- Smart GU10 track spots with WiFi/Bluetooth or Zigbee GU10 light sources.
- Connect via Philips Hue, Homey, Zigbee or Google Home
📌 Tip: Choose dimmable LED track spots that you can control with a smart dimmer. Some systems also work with motion sensors.
💡 How do I aim my track spots for optimal lighting?
🔍Guidelines per room:
- 🍽️Kitchen : aim spots at countertops (45-60° angle) for shadow-free light
- 🎨 Wall art : use accent lighting at a 30° angle
- 🧠Workspace : indirect light to prevent glare
- 🛋️ Living room : combine wide-beam and focused spots for ambiance
📌 Tip: Choose track spots with an adjustable lens for different beam angles (e.g., 24° to 60°).
🛠️ Can I connect track lighting to an existing ceiling junction box?
✅ Yes, in most cases, you can. However, a ceiling junction box is often larger than the connection block of a track system.A convenient item to order along with this is a center plate/ceiling canopy for track lighting.
📌Here's how to do it:
- Remove your existing ceiling light
- Attach a power feed connector directly to the ceiling junction box
- Screw the track to the ceiling
- Slide the center plate/ceiling canopy between the track and the ceiling junction box.
- Click your spots in, and you're done!
🛠️What do I need for a complete track lighting installation?
📋 Checklist:
- ✅Track rail(s)
- ✅Power adapter or center feed
- ✅Connectors (I-shape, L-shape, T-shape, X-shape, if needed)
- ✅1 or 3-phase track spots or pendant lights
- ✅Optional: LED dimmer, remote control, smart module, or dimmer.
-
✅
Plugs and screws (included)
📌 Tip: If in doubt, order a complete track lighting set or have a lighting plan created.
