Cables and Plugs
Do you need a power cable?
- Properties of the original cable
- The earthing of the cable
- The correct appliance plug
Power cable
A power cable has several designations, such as appliance cord or mains cord. This cabling supplies a device with mains voltage. The standard voltage in the Netherlands is 230 volts AC.
The simplest cable is one with an open end. You can mount this cable directly on your equipment. For lamps and other devices, there are also power cables including switches, which allow you to control the power supply.
Plugs
A plug is intended to safely, quickly and easily connect a device to the mains. In the Netherlands there are 2 types of plugs. The first is equipped with earthing. An earthed plug is used to connect equipment with metal parts on the outside, for example a metal cabinet. These metal parts are connected to an earthing connection. When you connect a device with earthing to a socket with earthing, it is connected to the protective earth and cannot become live.
The second type is a EURO plug, which has two connections (no earthing) and is often used for devices that have double insulation and limited power consumption. Due to the double insulation between the metal parts and the current-carrying parts, these cannot become live.
