Frequently Asked Questions TL Fixtures

Which fluorescent fixture do I need for my space?

This depends on the height of the space where the fluorescent fixtures will be installed. The higher the ceiling, the more light output you need to achieve adequate brightness on the work floor. Do you want a lot of light in your space? Then we always recommend opting for a double fluorescent fixture. Below is a brief summary of which length of fluorescent fixture you will need for a specific ceiling height.

  • 60cm fluorescent fixture (double): 2 - 2.5 meter height (e.g., above workbench)
  • 120cm LED tube fixture (double): 3 - 3.5 meter height
  • 150cm TL fixture (double): 4 - 4.5+ meter height

In taller spaces, you may need to place multiple fluorescent fixtures in a row to achieve sufficient lighting. This allows the light to overlap, ensuring adequate light output in a higher room.

How do I connect an LED fluorescent tube fixture?

You connect an LED fluorescent fixture directly to the mains. These are powered directly on one side with 220-240V (mains). The socket on the other side of the fluorescent fixture is only for holding the LED fluorescent tube and not for power. Pay close attention to how you place the LED fluorescent tube in the fixture. An LED fluorescent tube is also powered on one side. This is indicated on the LED fluorescent tube itself with the markings L & N.

Can I reuse my old fluorescent fixtures and install LED fluorescent tubes in them?

Yes, this is possible, but we do not recommend it. It is possible if you can place a LED starter in the fixture. This creates a bypass, allowing you to install a LED fluorescent tube in an old fixture. However, we do not recommend this because the ballast (ballast device) remains in operation and thus continues to consume power. This results in extra power consumption (+-10 Watt) that serves no purpose. The best solution is to replace the fixture with a LED fluorescent fixture.

What is the difference between an LED fluorescent fixture and an LED batten fixture?

The difference between an LED fluorescent fixture and an LED batten fixture is that an LED fluorescent fixture is suitable for separate LED fluorescent lighting. You can screw fluorescent tubes in and out of it. Should they break in the future, the tubes are easy to replace without having to buy a new fixture.

A Batten fixture is also a type of fluorescent fixture, but without the fluorescent lighting. A batten fixture incorporates an LED strip, which is not replaceable if it breaks. However, these fixtures are easy & quick to install, allowing you to save on installation costs if you need to hire an installer. Furthermore, the lifespan and efficiency of a batten fixture are also higher. A fixture that is very suitable for long-term use. This often makes a batten fixture the best choice from a business perspective.

How do you measure the length of a fluorescent tube?

A LED fluorescent tube is measured from pin to pin. A T8 LED fluorescent tube is 9/10 cases

  • 60cm
  • 90cm
  • 120cm
  • 150cm

Additionally, there is the T5 LED fluorescent tube variant. This is the slimmer version. This slimmer version has different dimensions of 55cm, 85cm, 115cm, and 145cm.

Can you convert an old fluorescent fixture to LED?

Yes, you can also convert old fluorescent fixtures to LED. This is generally only cost-effective if you can do it yourself. If an installer is required, it is better to purchase a new LED fluorescent fixture. Additionally, if you convert old fluorescent fixtures yourself, the CE certification will become void. This could lead to complications with your insurance company in the event of an incident. You can see how to convert an LED fluorescent fixture in our knowledge base article: "How do I connect LED fluorescent lighting?"

How many fluorescent light fixtures do you need per m²?

This depends on the space, of course. A bicycle shed/small shed at your home often requires less lighting than a commercial warehouse. Assuming we are dealing with a commercial warehouse, we often recommend 1x LED fluorescent tube fixture (120-150cm) per 15/20 M2. This also depends on the light intensity of a fluorescent fixture. For business use, we recommend choosing an LED fluorescent tube with a higher light output. (Pro series or Ultra series)

Advice for installing LED fluorescent fixtures:

  • Hang the fluorescent light fixtures 2 meters apart lengthwise.
  • Hang the fluorescent fixtures 3 – 3.5 meters apart widthwise.
  • Always hang a minimum of 2 rows in a room. It is better to have 2 rows of single fluorescent fixtures than 1 row of a double fluorescent fixture. With 2 rows, the light distribution is much better, which results in fewer shadows in the room. This makes for a much more pleasant working environment.

With this layout, you achieve excellent light distribution. The lighting overlaps, ensuring the light intensity is also evenly distributed. This overlapping of the lighting is very important.

Can I connect a fluorescent fixture in series?

Yes, a fluorescent tube fixture can be linked. You will just need to run a cable through the LED fluorescent tube fixture using terminal blocks. Use a cable that is thick enough for the power rating. This is 1.5mm² or more, depending on how long you want to make the light line. If you are connecting more than 50/60 fixtures in series, we recommend using thicker power cables.
