Why choose smart recessed spots?
Why are smart recessed spots so convenient? We explain this to you in a number of steps. Some of the reasons to choose smart recessed spots are as follows:
- Flexible control: With smart recessed spots, you can easily control the lighting via an app on your phone, but also via wireless battery-powered wall switches. This way, you can control the lighting from virtually anywhere in the world, even when you are on vacation!
- Automate and schedule: Automating your smart recessed spots is also very convenient. This way, you can choose when the lighting should automatically turn on/off, or change colour at a specific time of day.
- Integration with other smart devices: you can seamlessly connect smart recessed spots to your existing smart devices and have them communicate with each other. You can automate all of this in the app on your phone.
- Energy Efficiency: LED smart recessed spots are significantly more energy-efficient than standard LED spots. This is not related to the wattage, but to the settings and automation that you can apply to these smart recessed spots. This ensures that the lighting is never left on unnecessarily or for too long while you are already in bed or away from home. This allows you to save even more on your energy costs!
- Endless, creative and atmospheric possibilities: With smart recessed spots, you can experiment with different colours, brightness levels, lighting effects and much more. During a movie night, a party or a relaxing evening at home, you can adjust everything to your preference. This gives you much more flexibility and control over the systems in your home.
Different Control Options for Smart Recessed Spots
There are various control options in smart lighting. Nowadays there are many different brands that mainly work with two different control methods. Below we explain the differences to you.
Tuya - Smart Recessed Spots:
Smart WiFi lamps operate on the Tuya communication protocol. These are the most common smart lamps. WiFi smart lighting is an easy entry-level model as it can connect directly to your WiFi network. Each smart WiFi lamp contains a Tuya chip that works on your WiFi signal. Therefore it does not matter which brand of WiFi lamp you purchase. They all work the same. Naturally there are quality differences between the various lamps themselves. Furthermore this type of smart lighting is significantly more affordable than the Zigbee variant.
You can easily connect the WiFi lamps to multiple apps. Including: Tuya Smart, Smart Life, Nedis Smart, Homeylux, Hoftronic Smart. All these apps work with the Tuya communication protocol.
Zigbee - Smart Recessed Spotlights:

Zigbee 3.0 is a communication protocol similar to WiFi or Bluetooth. The protocol works as follows: A Zigbee product connects to a HUB/Bridge (e.g. Philips Hue, IKEA Tradfri or Homey). The HUB connects to the WiFi network and the HUB then communicates with the Zigbee lighting. The lamps communicate with each other by means of a mesh network, in which signals are forwarded to the lamps/devices. This is very useful when you have a large house, yard or large garden. Large distances can easily be bridged because each lamp amplifies the signal to the next lamp or device.Additionally, with Zigbee there are more possibilities with switches, sensors and dimmers to wirelessly control the lighting.
The installation is very simple, you do not need to run any additional wiring. This can be done on existing fixtures, fittings and cables. The only thing you need to purchase is a HUB/Bridge. The hub, because your phone does not have a Zigbee antenna after all.
Installation of smart recessed spotlights:
Installing smart recessed spotlights is very simple. Below we explain the steps required for this.
- Connecting smart recessed spotlights to the mains power (GU10 fitting + fixture often required)
- The lights will flash quickly; this is the pairing mode. If they do not, switch the lighting on/off 5 times quickly so they reset.
- Connecting to the network
- Tuya protocol --> Directly connect to WiFi network (2.4Ghz)
- Zigbee protocol --> Connecting to the bridge/hub (as long as the hub is Zigbee 3.0 compatible)
- Open the app and tap the + in the top right to add the smart spots.
- After adding the smart spots individually, you can create a group. With a group, you can control an entire group (kitchen, living room, bedroom) at once.
- You are all set, enjoy the smart spots!
