How many recessed spotlights do you need per m2?

Hoeveel inbouwspots plaats je per m2?

How many spotlights per m2? This is everything you need to know!

The number of spotlights you install per square meter depends on several factors, such as: the light output, the wattage, and of course, the type of light source. LED spotlights can be installed in various locations. For example, will you choose recessed LED spotlights, surface-mounted LED spotlights or LED wall spotlights?

It is important to consider the specific application and the desired effect of the LED spotlights. Various guidelines are followed when installing spotlights. A common rule of thumb is that LED spotlights should be placed at a distance of 1-2 meters from each other. This distance ensures that the light is distributed evenly and is not too bright. Placing recessed spotlights too close together can cause glare.Furthermore, it is also important to consider the size of the room. In a large room, you will need multiple LED Spots to achieve the desired effect, while in smaller rooms, fewer LED Spots will suffice.

Factors for the number of spots per m2

There are several factors to consider when installing LED (recessed) spots:

  • The wattage of the light source: the wattage of the light source determines how much light is needed per square meter. The wattage is related to the light output of the lamp, which in turn indicates how bright the light source is.
  • The type of light source: the type of light source also influences the number of spots you need. LED lighting emits more light than current energy-saving and halogen lighting. This should be taken into account when replacing them.
  • The size of the space: the larger the space, the more lighting you will need.
  • The reflection of the surfaces in the spaces: a white wall reflects more light than a dark wall. The reflectivity of the walls and their color determine how many light sources you need.

To determine the number of spotlights in a particular space, we use a rule of thumb. This rule of thumb assumes 2 Watts per square meter, or 2 Watts = 1 m2. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule, depending on the situation. A workspace requires more light than a cozy living room.

Number of illuminated m2 at various wattages

The terms wattage and lumens indicate the power and light output of a light source. However, these values do not indicate how many square meters are illuminated.Below, the number of illuminated square meters is displayed for various wattages.

Wattage LED (recessed) spot Lighting area (m2)
2 Watt 1-3 M2
3 Watt 2-4 M2
5 Watt 3-6 M2
7 Watt 6-8 M2
9 Watt 8-10 M2
12 Watt 12-15 M2
15 Watt 15-18 M2
18 Watt 18-20 M2

How far apart should the spots be placed?

The distance between the spots depends on several factors, for example, the distance between the ceiling and the floor.

The beam angle of a light source also plays a role in how far apart the spotlights should be placed. The table below shows various beam angles for spotlights. The column on the right indicates the recommended spacing between the spotlights.
LED Spotlight Beam Angle Spacing Between Spotlights
10° beam angle 0.5 M2
24° beam angle 1.0 M2
36° beam angle 1.5 M2
60° beam angle 2.7 M2
100° beam angle 5 M2
