The Difference Between a 1-Phase and a 3-Phase Track
If you have started your search for track lighting, you have undoubtedly heard of 1-phase or 3-phase systems, or 1- or 3-phase circuit tracks. We often get the question: what is the difference between 1-phase and 3-phase? You will learn all the differences between the types of track lighting in this blog.
What is a phase?
In a (standard) three-wire electrical cable, there is one neutral wire, one earth wire, and one phase wire.
The phase wire is the wire that is live relative to the earth wire and the neutral wire. The phase wire, together with the neutral wire, carries the electrical current to and from the connected equipment/lighting.
1-Phase vs. 3-Phase
The image below shows the connections for 1-Phase and 3-Phase Track Lighting.

With 1-phase track lighting, the electricity runs between two wires: the neutral wire (N) and the phase wire (L). Because the tracks have two wires, all track spots are on a single phase. This means that all LED light sources on the track are controlled together. All light sources are switched on, switched off, or dimmed simultaneously.
With 3-phase track lighting (as shown in the image), there are 3 phase wires (L). In the image, these phase wires are indicated as L1, L2, and L3. Each of these phase wires can be combined separately with the neutral wire (N). This allows 3-phase track lighting to create three different circuits on a single track. For example, you can create different circuits with track spots and pendant lights. These three circuits/phases can be operated independently of each other. The 3 phases can be switched on, switched off, and dimmed separately. This is very useful when you want to switch off part of the track rail and switch on another part of the track rail.

Pros and cons of 1-Phase and 3-Phase track lighting
Both types of rail systems have their pros and cons. For professional or retail use, we always recommend 3-Phase Rail Systems. Below is a summary of the advantages and disadvantages of a 3-phase rail system compared to a 1-phase rail system.
Advantages
- There is a wider selection of 3-phase track spots than 1-phase track spots. Also, 3-Phase Track Spots are available in higher wattages than 1-Phase track spots.3-Phase Track Lights are available in wattages up to 50 Watts. If you want to illuminate a shop or a large space, these wattages are more suitable.
- With 3-Phase tracks, it is easier to conceal cables. The 3-Phase tracks are larger than 1-Phase tracks, making it easier to hide cables. Because the tracks are larger, they also better cover the hole in the ceiling where the cable comes out. Furthermore, 3-Phase tracks are easier to install in large spaces.
- With 3-Phase tracks, it is possible to create different circuits. These circuits can each be switched on and off separately.
- 3-Phase tracks and track lights are more stable and sturdier than 1-Phase track lights. They are of higher quality and have a more luxurious appearance.
- With 3-Phase tracks, you can use all three phases, but you can also choose to use 2 phases or 1 phase. To use only one phase on a 3-phase track, connect only L1. If you have a two-way switch (and want to control the tracks via two switches), connect the other switch to L2.
Disadvantages
- 3-phase track lighting is more expensive than 1-phase track lighting.
- 3-phase track lighting is aesthetically slightly less elegant than 1-phase track lighting. The 3-phase tracks are slightly taller, and the adapters for the 3-phase track spots are slightly larger.
Applications for 1-Phase and 3-Phase Track Lighting
LED track lighting is becoming increasingly popular. This is not only because it is very easy to install, but also because the track systems are very sleek and have a luxurious appearance. Track lighting is used by both individuals and businesses. We are often asked: what type of track lighting do I need for my situation? The applications for 1-phase and 3-phase track lighting are explained in more detail below.
Applications for 1-phase track lighting
- Living room
- Kitchen
- Hallway
