Het verschil tussen 1/ 3-fase rails en magnetische rails

What are the differences between 1/3-phase track lighting and magnetic track lighting?

When you start your search for track lighting , you will undoubtedly wonder, what are the differences between 1-phase /3-phase track lighting? We often get this question, and that's why in this blog article, we explain the difference between a 1-phase and a 3-phase track lighting system. Which track system is most suitable for your situation? If you still have questions after reading this blog, you can contact our lighting experts without any obligation. They will be happy to help you choose the right track lighting!

What is 1-phase track lighting?

1-phase track systems are used with a single power supply line; this track system is often used for simple lighting applications. When you want to operate a track with a single switch or a single dimmer from one location in your home, 1-phase track lighting is the most suitable option. 1-phase track lighting is a versatile and efficient lighting system often used in commercial and residential applications. The 1-phase track is therefore the easiest to install.

Advantages of a 1-phase track system:

  • Simple installation: By using only one power supply (1-phase), the installation of a 1-phase track is very simple, making it an affordable solution.
  • Flexibility in placing fixtures: With 1-phase track lighting, the fixtures can be easily mounted and moved on the track. This offers a lot of flexibility when you want to accentuate certain objects with light.
  • Suitable for all spaces, small and large: Due to the simplicity of a 1-phase track system, the track is ideal for smaller or larger spaces. They are easy to assemble and the tracks can be cut to the desired length. This can all be connected to the existing wiring.
  • Most affordable solution: Due to the simple installation of the tracks, you need few installation hours. It is therefore the ideal system between cost-efficiency and performance. This makes a 1-phase track system attractive for most projects.
  • Can be combined with many fixtures: A 1-phase track system supports a wide range of fixtures, including 1-phase track spots, 1-phase spotlights, 1-phase pendant fixtures, 1-phase hanging lamps, and other decorative fixtures.

What is 3-phase track lighting?

A 3-phase track system is an advanced and flexible system that is widely used in commercial and large-scale applications.

A 3-phase track uses three separate power supply lines (3 phases), which provides an even higher degree of flexibility in operating and controlling the lighting compared to a 1-phase track system. You can operate the tracks separately from each other with 3 different switches or dimmers. A 3-phase track system can also handle much more fixtures and wattage because the copper wires in the tracks are thicker. The quality of a 3-phase track is also a bit higher; it feels sturdier and is better suited for frequently placing and moving track lights or other fixtures. As a result, you will often see this track system in shops, hospitality, hotels, showrooms, and other commercial applications.

Advantages of a 3-phase track system:

  • Flexible track operation: With three separate power supply lines, a 3-phase track system allows you to connect the track spots to different circuits. This makes it possible to control the lighting zones independently of each other. This allows you to adjust the lighting in a commercial space to specific needs.
  • Suitable for complex spaces: A 3-phase track system is ideal for larger and more complex commercial spaces. The lighting is easier and more flexible to control, allowing you to precisely manage the atmosphere and functionality of a room. Additionally, a 3-phase track can power longer lengths at once and thus also more and higher wattage track spots. This is perfect for large and high commercial spaces where a high light output is desirable.
  • Variable in setting light scenes: Thanks to the ability to connect fixtures to 3 phases, 3-phase track lighting can be easily adjusted to create different light scenes. From a bright product presentation to subtle ambient lighting.
  • Easy to expand and adjust: Just like a 1-phase track system, a 3-phase track system can also be easily expanded, and you can easily mount and move the fixtures along the entire track system.
  • Professional quality and appearance: A 3-phase track is also qualitatively a bit better than a 1-phase track system. A 3-phase track is somewhat heavier and is better suited for professional applications, especially when you frequently move the fixtures. This also results in a more beautiful appearance!

What is magnetic track lighting?

A magnetic track system is an advanced and the latest track system that uses magnetic principles to power and control the fixtures. This innovative track system offers numerous advantages over 1-phase and 3-phase track systems.A magnetic track system is of high quality and is widely used in luxury homes, commercial spaces, upscale hotels, and restaurants. A magnetic track system operates on a low voltage of 48 volts. Therefore, a magnetic track system is not connected directly to the mains power (220-240V); for this, you need a converter from 220-240V to 48 Volts. The advantage of this is that the voltage is safer for children and pets. This allows you to recess or surface-mount the track on a wall, making it safer to use than a 1-phase or 3-phase track system, which are powered directly by the mains. Thus, the flexibility of a magnetic track system is even greater because the system can be mounted on both the ceiling and the wall.

With magnetic tracks, you have a choice of:

  • Surface-mounted magnetic tracks: These tracks can be mounted on an existing ceiling.
  • Recessed plaster magnetic tracks: These tracks can be recessed and then finished with plasterwork.
  • Recessed ceiling magnetic tracks: These tracks can be recessed and then finished with a plasterboard ceiling or another type of ceiling.

Advantages of a Magnetic Track System:

  • Flexibility and design: With magnetic track lighting, the fixtures are easy to click into the tracks and move. The tracks also provide a luxurious appearance because the fixtures are largely integrated into the tracks, which looks much more elegant than with 1-phase or 3-phase tracks. This is why you often see magnetic tracks in high-end spaces.
  • Safe voltage: The magnetic track can be mounted on both the ceiling and the wall. Due to the low voltage of 48 Volts, it is safe for children and pets.
  • You will not experience any immediate danger or an electric shock upon contact.
  • Luxurious appearance: Because the fixtures for a magnetic rail are largely or even completely concealed within the rail, it creates a very beautiful and luxurious look. This appears many times more attractive than a 1-phase or 3-phase rail.
  • Silent operation: With 1-phase or 3-phase systems, it can sometimes happen that the track spots or the rails produce a very soft buzzing sound. This is not the case with a 48-volt rail; a magnetic rail system is completely silent.
  • Professional quality: The quality of a magnetic rail system and its corresponding fixtures is very high. The light rendering of the magnetic rail fixtures is excellent, which does full justice to the space. This is, of course, desirable when it is installed in luxurious spaces.
