What do you need to connect an LED strip (220V)?
To connect an LED strip, you need several components. Would you like to be provided with all the necessary items? Order a bundle and you will have everything you need.
First of all, you naturally need an LED strip. These are available in many variants. LED strips come in different light colors: 2800K-3000K (Warm white), 4500K (Natural White) and 6000K (Daylight white). In addition, there is also an RGB variant. An RGB LED strip features 7 different light colors, namely red, orange, purple, blue, green, yellow and 6000K (Daylight white). An LED strip is available in:
- 12 Volt
- 24 Volt
- 220-230 Volt (a 220-230 Volt LED strip can be connected directly to mains power)
To connect an LED strip, you need an LED strip adapter. This adapter must have the same voltage as the LED Strip. Furthermore, the power of the adapter depends on the length and the wattage of the LED Strip.
When you have an LED Strip that does not need to be controlled, for example a 6000K (Daylight White) LED Strip, you do not need any additional components. Would you like to be able to control your LED Strip remotely as well? You can do this by using a remote control. For example, you can control an RGB LED Strip remotely by means of the RGB IR remote control.
What you need:
- LED strip (usually on a roll)
- Adapter (suitable for the voltage of the LED strip)
- Dimmer/controller (optional, for dimming or controlling colours)
- Connectors (optional, for connecting multiple LED strips)
- Optional: soldering iron and solder (if loose connections need to be made)
- Scissors or cutting pliers (to cut the LED strip to size)
Step 1: Choose a location
- Choose a suitable place where you want to mount the LED strip, such as under cabinets, along baseboards or on the ceiling.
- Ensure access to a mains power point
- Measure the length you need and cut the LED strip if necessary at the right place (this can be done on the indicated cutting lines).
Step 2: Cut the LED strip to size (if necessary)
- Identify the cutting lines on the LED strip. These are markings where you can safely cut the strip without interrupting the circuit.
- Use a pair of scissors or wire cutters to cut along the cutting line.
For more information, see below:
Step 3: Connect the LED strip to the power source
- LED strips typically operate on a power adapter. Connect the positive (+) and negative (-) wires of the LED strip to the correct terminals of the adapter. These are usually the red (positive) and black (negative) wires.
- If you use a dimmer or controller then connect the LED strip to the controller and connect the controller to the power supply.
For more information, please read below:
Step 4: Test the connection
-
- Plug the adapter into the power outlet and check whether the LED strip works. The strip should light up immediately if it is properly connected.
- If a controller is connected, test whether you can dim the LED strip or change its color (if it is an RGB strip).
More information can be found below
Step 5: Mount the LED strip
- Most LED strips have a self-adhesive backing. Remove the protective layer and affix the strip to the desired location. Ensure the surface is clean and dry for proper adhesion.
- If necessary, you can also mounting clips be used for added stability.
Step 6: Cable management
- Conceal the cables using cable ties or trunking so that everything is neatly and safely finished.
What to do when you cut an LED strip?
All our 220V LED strips can be cut per metre. This is also indicated by a scissors symbol on the LED strip. You therefore cannot cut the LED strip at 30 or 50 cm intervals. If you wish to reuse the remaining section, you must purchase an additional 220V adapter. You can then fit the end cap onto the LED strip. These LED strips are also suitable for outdoor use; however, an additional step must be performed. In this situation, it is important that you seal or tape the end piece so that no water can enter. Once you have done this, you can place the LED strip in a damp location!

Would you like to connect an LED Strip but do not know exactly how it works? No problem! Using the explanation below, you can easily connect a 220 Volt LED Strip .
Connecting an LED Strip is easier than it seems. Using the adapter, you can connect the LED Strip to the mains power. Included with the adapter is a connector. This is a copper coupling piece. The 2 pins of the coupling piece must make contact with the LED strip and the corresponding adapter.
The LED strip contains 2 cables. One of them is the ‘+’ side and one of them is the ‘-’ side. The adapter also contains two cables, one blue and one brown. It is important that you connect the cables to the correct terminals on the adapter. The brown wire must be connected to the ‘+’ side of the LED strip and the blue wire to the ‘-’ side. You can distinguish the ‘+’ and ‘-’ sides by looking at the LED strip itself. When you look, you will see a small plus sign on one side of the LED strip. Connect the brown wire to this point. You can also find this in the connection diagram below. It is not a problem if you connect the ‘+’ and ‘-’ incorrectly. You can simply reverse the adapter and reconnect it.
Additionally, it is important that the two metal pins make contact with the metal wires that run through the LED strip (this is easier to see on the back of the LED strip). This must be done carefully, otherwise the LED strip will not work.
Would you like to connect the LED Strip including dimmer? You can then follow the connection diagram below.
Connection diagram 220V RGB LED Strips
Connecting an RGB LED Strip works according to the same principle as connecting a standard LED Strip. However, an RGB LED strip has 4 cables instead of 2. With this cable you also receive a connector that allows you to connect the LED Strip and the adapter to each other.Because the LED strip has 4 cables, the connector also has 4 pins.

Next, you can connect the adapter to the LED strip. To do this, carefully examine the LED strip. When looking at the very end, you will see 3 letters. From top to bottom, these are the letter B, the letter R, and the letter G.
When looking at the adapter, you will notice it has 4 wires in different colours: green, blue, red and black. You must connect the adapter so that the black wire is at the bottom, aligning with the letter G. If you reverse the adapter and connect it to the LED strip, it will not light up. It is therefore important to match the correct colour to the appropriate letter. You can then plug the adapter into the power outlet and control the LED strip. You can also find this in the wiring diagram below.
It is important that the four metal pins make contact with the wires that run through the LED strip (you can see this better on the back of the LED strip). This must be done carefully, otherwise the LED strip will not work. Do you want to dim your RGB LED Strip? You can often dim the LED Strip using the RGB Remote Control. With a remote control you can change the color of the LED Strip, switch it on and off and dim it. This way you can always create the desired atmosphere!
